Today, Rwandans united in a poignant tribute to their national heroes, champions of unwavering patriotism and selfless sacrifice for the nation and its people. President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame led the nation in laying a wreath at the National Heroes Mausoleum, honoring those whose bravery and patriotism have paved the way for a resilient and determined nation.
In a moving address, President Kagame remarked, ‘Today, we pay homage to the Rwandan men and women whose courage and patriotism have laid the groundwork for a nation determined to shape its own destiny. In the face of regional and global challenges, today serves as a reminder of our capacity to stand up for what is right, protect our nation, and build a legacy of prosperity for generations. Happy Heroes Day!’
The celebrated heroes, classified into three categories – Imanzi, Imena, and Ingenzi – represent a spectrum of extraordinary individuals. Imanzi features supreme heroes like Maj. Gen. Fred Gisa Rwigema and the ‘Unknown Soldier,’ symbolizing all who sacrificed their lives during the 1990-1994 Liberation Struggle. Imena includes revered figures such as King Mutara Rudahigwa III, Michel Rwagasana, Agatha Uwiringiyimana, Felicite Niyitegeka, and the courageous Nyange Secondary School students. The Ingenzi category highlights heroes known for their exceptional ideas and outstanding achievements.
On this day, Rwanda not only commemorates its history but also draws inspiration from the resilience and dedication of its heroes, fostering a collective spirit that continues to shape the nation’s bright future.
