Now what is Diphtheria?

Diphtheria is a disease caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The bacteria releases toxins that damage respiratory tissue cells and form grey tissues in the throat of infected individuals. The formed tissues in return causes affected person incredible breathing and swallowing problems. This disease is highly contagious and could be fatal.
Diphtheria is not a newly discovered disease in the world. It was an epidemic in the United States in the early 1920s with over 200,000 cases. However, the development and use of vaccines alongside improved living conditions has helped to bring the disease under control.
There are two types of Diphtheria: Classical respiratory diphtheria (diphtheria of the throat), and Cutaneous diphtheria (which appears on any part of the body with skin rash or blisters). The cutaneous diphtheria is rare.
How can this disease be contacted?
Diphtheria can be contacted through airborne droplets and contact with personal items of infected persons. By airborne droplets we mean droplets from sneezing, coughing, and sneezing.
