Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines: Soaring Partnerships and Sky-High Confidence Despite Recent Turbulence

Boeing, the prominent player in US aviation manufacturing, is once again under scrutiny as one of its 737 Max 9 planes, operated by Alaska Airlines, experienced a mid-flight fuselage incident on its journey from Portland to Ontario last week. This development raises concerns with potential ramifications for Ethiopian Airlines, a key partner of Boeing in Africa.
In a groundbreaking move last November, Ethiopian Airlines announced a colossal order of eleven 787 Dreamliner and twenty 737 MAX planes from Boeing, marking the largest-ever purchase of Boeing planes by an African airline. Despite the scrutiny Boeing faced after the Flight 302 disaster in March 2019, Ethiopian Airlines, already boasting the largest Dreamliner fleet in Africa, emphasized the strength of its relationship with Boeing.
When questioned about the recent incident involving the 737 Max 9, Boeing highlighted Ethiopian Airlines’ use of different models but pointed to CEO Dave Calhoun’s commitment to ensuring the safety of every aircraft. Calhoun stated that Boeing would take all necessary actions to prevent a recurrence of such events.
The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Mesfin Tesaw, expressed confidence in Boeing’s corrective measures at the time of the deal, stating that they had verified the resolution of the design defect in the aircraft. The ties between the two companies strengthened further in December when Boeing appointed Henok Teferra Shawl, a former vice-president of Ethiopian Airlines, as the managing director for Boeing Africa.
Chidozie Uzoezie, aviation analyst and founder of the African Aviation Group, asserts that Boeing’s recent challenges should be viewed as an isolated incident, with no spill-over effect on Ethiopian Airlines. He affirms that the airline’s operation of Boeing’s well-established models, such as the 777, 787, and 737 NG/MAX, instills confidence in their safety.
Uzoezie contends that the Boeing 737 MAX 8, once the most scrutinized model post-Flight 302, is now among the safest aircraft in the sky. He anticipates that Ethiopian Airlines will maintain confidence in Boeing, given their longstanding partnership and successful track record. However, he emphasizes the importance of Boeing addressing safety concerns promptly, as Ethiopian Airlines prioritizes the safety of passengers and crew. Failure to do so could potentially prompt the airline to explore alternatives for its fleet.
