The US continues to be the remittance powerhouse, with a record-shattering $228.4 million (Ksh29.9 billion) sent in March alone. This constitutes over half of the total remittances received and is actually helping to strengthen the Kenyan shilling. A stronger shilling means cheaper imports and a potential easing of pressure on everyday essentials like electricity and fuel.

This positive trend is a turnaround from a challenging period. Remember the war in Ukraine? It disrupted global supply chains, sending inflation skyrocketing in places like the US and Europe. This meant Kenyans abroad had less extra cash to send home, impacting families back in Kenya. Thankfully, with the conflict cooling down, disposable income appears to be on the rise again, benefiting Kenyans both at home and abroad.
